Graduate Direct Exchange Programs
Program Overview
The Graduate Direct Exchange programs were established at the University of Kansas after World War II to provide students with opportunities to pursue non-degree graduate-level studies in their fields. Under the terms of each reciprocal agreement, an enrolled graduate student of KU may study at one of our European partner universities (listed below) during the academic year, while a European graduate student attends the University of Kansas. Direct Exchange Scholars receive tuition and modest monthly stipends from the partner institutions for room, board and incidental expenses. Students will generally need to supplement their stipends with their own funds or student loans to ensure enough money to travel and to participate in extracurricular activities. All partner institutions also require the payment of modest campus privilege fees (for library usage, technology access, and the like) by GDX participants. Travel and other incidental expenses must be covered by personal funds.
Eligible Applicants
To be eligible to participate in the Graduate Direct Exchange Program, applicants must be KU students with graduate standing at the time their program begins. A Direct Exchange Scholar must maintain KU graduate student status during the year of the scholarship. To do this, all GDX participants must formally enroll in at least one GDX credit hour at KU for the fall and spring semesters (at their own expense). This process is managed through the Office of Study Abroad. Enrollment at KU while participating in the GDX program ensures maintenance of graduate student standing at KU. Enrollment also facilitates the process of transferring graduate credit from our partner institutions to KU upon the completion of the academic year abroad. Finally, enrollment as a GDX participant ensures students’ eligibility for federal student loans. Accepted participants will be instructed to contact Justine Hamilton in the Office of Study Abroad for orientation and enrollment information.
In the application review process, preference will be given to applicants who are enrolled or will be enrolled in KU graduate programs as degree seeking students (although students who will hold formal graduate non-degree status at the time of participation may apply). GDX scholarships are available to graduating KU seniors who are also applying for graduate programs of study at KU and to enrolled KU graduate students only. Applicants must have the requisite language and academic background appropriate for the program and institution of choice. All accepted participants will also be expected to submit a final report on their experience to the KU Office of International Programs upon program completion.
Application Process
Competition for this 2012-2013 academic year scholarship will close with the application deadline of February 13, 2012. Prospective candidates will be interviewed as part of the application process. Interviews will be conducted in late February and early March by student and faculty members of the Graduate Direct Exchange Committee. Scholarships for nominees selected by the committee are not official until the nominee has been accepted by the host university. The nomination process may require the completion of additional forms from the partner institution, but this will not be done until accepted for nomination by the KU GDX committee.
To apply, all prospective participants must submit the application that has been linked to below. Applications must be complete by the deadline and submitted electronically (language evaluation forms and letters of recommendation may come separately and in paper or electronic form). Please note that students may only apply to one Graduate Direct Exchange program institution at a time.
A complete application must be submitted by 5:00 pm on February 13, 2012 and will include:
- Completed electronic application
- Scanned unofficial academic transcripts for all postsecondary academic work
- Language evaluation
- Three letters of recommendation
Please return completed applications by email to Therese Danley, tdanley@ku.edu, International Programs. A dossier checklist can be printed here. Applicants should also contact Therese Danley for additional information or questions related to the Graduate Direct Exchange programs or the application submission process. Basic information and links to the GDX partner institutions’ web sites have been provided below.
